In The Spotlight So Clear
by John Hume

A great deal of information regarding this publication has already been covered in our 'Chat With John Hume' elsewhere in this issue so I'll attempt to be brief here.

"In The Spotlight So Clear" features photographs of Bob Dylan in concert through the years 1984 to 1998. Over 90% of the photographs are previously unpublished and a great many are from the past three years, since the publication of John's previous book "I've been Shooting In The Dark Too Long ".

With almost two-dozen of the books fifty plus photos coming from October '97 and June '98, Dylan's last two visits to the UK are represented here in depth. The whole of the 1997 UK mini tour is covered as are Birmingham, Wembley, Newcastle, Glasgow and Dublin from '98. To my eyes, the pictures from this period constitute some of John's best work to date.

Some of the earlier photos suffer a little from grain, the biggest enemy of any photographer being poor lighting conditions and ultra fast film, both of which will help to promote grain. Though in some cases, page 41 for instance, this grain can be used to create a rather pleasing artistic effect.

"In The Spotlight So Clear" contains 72 pages though for aesthetic reasons some of the pages are left blank. Unlike the previous book that contained a large number smaller photos, in the main the pictures here are presented either full or half A4 page. With its heavier A4 laminated softback cover and superior quality satin pages, those that enjoyed "Shooting In The Dark should be delighted with "Spotlight".

"In The Spotlight So Clear" is available direct from the author. Price: £20 / $35. Add Postage - UK £2.50 / Europe & ROW £3.00 / $5.00 Air.
